How To Wash String Curtains?

By Ann

You’re probably thinking: “Now this is a challenge! How do I wash all those strings without knotting them together and making a total mess?” The good news is that it’s not as complicated as it might seem. The first answer is to take the dirty curtains to dry cleaning. It’s the easiest solution, but you’ll lose some time and some money in the process.

The most reasonable thing to do would be to wash the string curtains yourself. There are two ways of doing this:

First, you can take off the strings and put them in a washbasin with warm water and detergent. Let them soak for a while. Then you can add some more cleanser and give your curtains a gentle hand wash. Rinse them a couple of times until there’s no more detergent left in the material. Don’t squeeze them too much – you’re risking deforming their shape! Just make sure there’s not too much water left in them and hang them in the bathroom or outside and let them dry. Remember – the material will keep the shape that you’re giving it when you hang it for drying! So, if you don’t want to lose hours ironing a couple dozen strings, hang them straight and nice while they’re still wet and dripping water.  They will dry naturally and keep their shape until the next washing. After they’re dry, all you have to do is take them off the drying string and hang them where they belong – between doorways, at a window, around your bed or even as a wall decoration.

The second way of washing string curtains at home is to use the washing machine. But beware – if you just take the curtains and put all those strings in the washing machine, mixing them with other types of laundry, you’ll only achieve hours of hard work detangling obscure pieces of material in extremely weird combinations.

Here is the wise way: when you buy the string curtains, make sure there’s a specific washing bag included in the package. There also should be some easy instructions on how to wash the product. In this case, just take the string curtains, bag them and put them in the washing machine, altogether with other laundry of the same type and color. After washing them, repeat the drying procedure explained above – take the strings one by one and give them manually a nice straight shape while they’re still wet. Of course, they won’t be as wet as after a hand wash, but it has to be enough. Hang them on a drying string and make sure they don’t have knots and the structure of the material is not deformed.

If you don’t have a special bag or you simply don’t remember where you put it after you first installed your string curtains, you can buy one online or make a washing bag yourself. Just take two square pieces of a very thin material (the most netlike, the better) and sew them together, leaving the fourth edge free. If you want a fancy model and your sewing skills are above average, you can attach a zipper. An easier way will be to attach a string around the open part of your bag.

Now everything is prepared and soon your string curtains will be clean, fresh, and ready to create that charming atmosphere again!
