String Curtains – the Color Palette

By Ann

When you go online and search for string curtains, you’ll find a wide range of available models: different fabrics, lengths and colors, not to mention the prices! Choosing the right fabric is not easy, but selecting a suitable color is probably the most difficult thing (especially when it comes to curtains!).

Before browsing the available products, there are several things that you have to take into consideration: the style of your home decor, its color scheme, your own preferences and, of course, your budget.

You might ask: what has the budget to do with the colors of string curtains? It’s very easy. The price of these curtains depends, first of all, on the type, the quality, the sheerness (the number of strings per inch) and the length of the material. Since each fabric has its own unique look (silk will definitely look different than leather, linen or polyester), the same color can look differently on different materials!

Of course, natural fabrics (silk, linen, wool or leather) are the most expensive ones. Rayon (even if it’s a synthetic material) has also a good quality, being a little cheaper. Polyester is probably the cheapest fabric as far as string curtains are concerned. However, this does not mean that only expensive curtains will look good! If you have a good taste and imagination, you can find original solutions even with a limited budget!

So let’s proceed to analyzing the available color palette of string curtains:

1. White and other neutral tones (light beige, cream, pastel, taupe). White (along with its neighboring shades) symbolizes purity and tidiness. Light string curtains are probably the most popular, since they make the room look bright, spacious and extremely aristocratic.

2. Black. Being the simplest yet the most mysterious color, black symbolizes earth, stability, but also death. Black string curtains are a good chose for those courageous people who enjoy creating dramatic effects, and also for those who cherish their privacy – this color will efficiently protect the room from light and curious eyes.

2. Sparkling colors (silver, gold, bronze and iridescent color combinations). Sparkling colors can look both royal and tasteless – it all depends on your skill to combine them with other elements of your decor. Making one sparkling accent can look gorgeous – for example, silver or gold string curtains on a white, cream or peach general color scheme. However, if there are too many dazzling accessories in a room, your home will probably look like a cheap oriental bazaar! Of course, you can always experiment and make your fantasies come true, but don’t exaggerate!

3. Red is another popular color. It symbolizes passion, vitality, power, action, courage and self-confidence. Red string curtains are a perfect accessory for a bedroom – of course, with the condition that its owner’s personality dictated the color choice in the first place! For creating a stylish decor, you can match the curtains with another accessory – a little carpet, a vase or even a painting in red shades. You can even place the string drapes around your bed and feel like an ancient queen! Besides the bedroom, you can use string curtains in red tones in your living room, your office, a public place like a hotel or a restaurant – in the end, you can use them everywhere, only make sure that your choice is well justified!

4. Purple, pink and their derivatives – lavender, amethyst, violet, fuchsia and indigo. Purple is a color of magic, of mystery and also royalty. Frankly, purple is a moody color – for looking good, it requires special arrangements! Again, purple curtains can look good only if the room is spacious, uncluttered and the walls have a light color. Otherwise, this expressive shade will easily suffocate you and your home! On the other hand, pink is a very feminine, even girlie color. You can easily install pink string curtains in your daughter’s bedroom.

5. Yellow is the color of happiness and wisdom. However, don’t forget to be wise if you want to install yellow string curtains! Strategically placed (especially at the windows), they will add warmness to your room. Don’t place them in places with no lightning – they will look dull and lifeless. Yellow needs light in order to fully vibrate!

6. Orange is a powerful color – it’s no wonder that it’s used so much by different commercial companies. It symbolizes vitality, but also endurance. Being extremely expressive, it should be treated like dynamite! In small proportions, it can make your home look cheerful and full of light. If the orange curtains are everywhere, and you also have many pieces of orange furniture around the house, you can be sure that your guests’ eyes will get tired extremely fast!

7. Blue, green, lime and turquoise. These fresh colors symbolize nature and life – after all, blue is the color of the ocean while green is the color of the trees! If you have a warm room, you can install green or blue string curtains – they will instantly create a cooling, calming effect.

8. Gray, charcoal, brown and chocolate brown. These earthly colors are extremely serious and mature. You can use them only for making small accents – otherwise your home will have a sad look! Imagine only that all your curtains are grey or dark brown! Everyone will think that you have lots of sorrow hidden in your heart!

Besides these basic colors, you will also find on the market a myriad of different patterns and color combinations of string curtains! Some are manufactured by mixing strings of different colors – this creates a vertical pattern. Others are made by painting horizontal strips over the entire string curtain panel – this will create a horizontal pattern.

The most classical pattern is black and white. In rest, the color combinations are countless! If you’re not satisfied with the available offer, you can find manufacturers that accept custom orders – they will create a unique set of string curtains based on your design.
